The Philippines

Published by admin under Asia

The Philippines is an archipelago consisting of over 7000 islands (7107 islands) stretched to a length of 805 km located in the SE corner of Asia and separated from the mainland continent by the South China Sea. Only 7% of the many islands present here have a surface greather than 2 km and only one third have a name. The combined surface of the islands is around 300.000 square km of which the biggest are Luzon in the north (108.000 sq km) where the Philippines capital city, Manila, is located and Mindanao in the south (99.000 sq km). Only one third of the 7000 islands have a name most of them being uninhabited, making the destination even more exotic.
Most of the people living here are situated on 11 of the islands, the most whell known being Negros, Leyte, Samar, Palawan, Panay, Bohol, Leyte, Masbate, Mindoro, and Cebu.
The Philippines arhipelago is separated from Taiwan on the N by the Bashi Channel (forming part of the Luzon Strait) on the SW by the Balabac Strait and the Sibutu Passage (off the Sulu Archipelago). Bordering seas include the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean on the E, the Celebes Sea on the S, the Sulu Sea on the SW, and the South China Sea on the W. The Philippines has a total coastline of 36,289 km.
The warm tropical waters, the extraordinary marine life, the breath-taking landscape of islands and mountains are just some of the reasons why tourists choose this destination.

On the island of Samar tourists visit the beautiful city of Viriato which stretches along the coast. From here they can choose to do many fun and unforgettable activities such as visiting unpopulated islands, taking unique climbing routes in the nearby rocky mountains or just relax on the beautiful beaches.
In the city of Banaue you can still see the terraces built for the cultivation of rice 2000 years ago and the ingenious irrigation system invented by the primitive head-hunters, wooden tubes created from bamboo placed in the ground.

The National “Park of 100 Islands” is another popular tourist destination for the incredible beauty of the islands which have been strangely shapped by the water to the most unusual forms. The most popular islands are Quezon and “The Children’s Island”.

A unique fenomenon in the world is the so called “Chocolate Hills”. This was formed by the lava from numerous volcanic eruptions setteling down in many lairs along the years giving the hills a darkish brown color just like chocolate.

Perhaps one of the most exotic places in the Philippines is found on Mindano island. Here tourists can travel to Sebu lake located in the mountains at a hight of 300 meters where a completely isolated tribe lives called T’boli. Here hand-made original items can be purchased from the villagers.

These are just some of the exotic places the make the Philippines one of the most exotic destinations on the planet where you can still see unaltered natural beauty.

St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna

Published by admin under Europe

Vienna, the city of music, waltz, many beautiful balls and buildings, the gardens bloom, and even the hills picturesquely “dressed in vineyard which will please all the customers of the Heuriger restaurants … A city recrossed not only by the carriages with horses and by the coachmen of the fairy tales, but also by the Danube…
Vienna is an architectural museum outdoors. The old buildings are in a perfect state of storage. The former capital of the empire Vienna is to be admired by any visitor. No matter how much you walk through Vienna, you will not be disappointed. The only impediment is that you will get tired. Nothing compares to this wonderful city, with streets that gate in a different world, in another age. You will first be carried in the past and then in the future…

The Dome of Saint Stephen in Vienna was built in the XVIIth century. It is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna, a symbol of the city, and a place of many important events in the history of Austria. Its patron is Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Choosing the patron has to do with the fact that until the establishment of the Bishopric of Vienna (in the year 1469), the city belonged canonically to the Diocese of Passau, whose cathedral is also patroned by St. Stephen, the first martyr.

St. Stephen’s cathedral is one of the most representative buildings of the Gothic Europe. The North Tower, with a height of 70 meters, was decorated under the Renaissance style, and during the Reform its internal has been adjusted to correspond to the Baroque style. The bell of the cathedral, called Pummerin, has no less than 21 tonnes and after it was damaged during the Second World War, it is now only used to mark important events like New Year’s Day.

The Gothic building the most representative for Austria, hosts inside treasures of art, which can be seen only in the framework of an organized tour: the Emperor Frederick III’s vault made of red marble, sculpted between 1467-1513 by Niclas Gehaert van Leyden. Another treasure is the pulpit, Anton Pilgram’s work (1514-1515) - who settled under it his own portrait in relief as a signature. You can also admire here a part of Vienna Neustadt shrine, the tomb of the Prince of Savoy in 1754. If you climb the 343 stairs of the cathedral’s tower you will be surrounded by a wonderful view.

The Great Chinese Wall

Published by admin under Asia

The Great Chinese Wall, one of the great wonders of the world, lies like a huge dragon passing through dessert, plains and high mountains having a combined lenght of aproximately 6700 kilometers from the east to west of China. With a history of over 2000 years, some portions of the wall are now in ruins, while some have entirely disappeared.
Nobody knows exactly when contruction of the Great Chinese wall started, but it is believed that originally it was built with the purpose of defense against the tribes, during the Zhou Dynasty. Later between 770 and 476 B.C. it was perfected by the emperors Yan, Zhao and Qin for the same purpose of defense. Intialy the Great Wall was built in pieces as protection walls for each separate state and only during the Quin dynasty the emperor unified the wall after the unification of China to protect against the invading huns in the north. The wall was further lenghtened and strengthened during the next dynasties, especially during the Ming dynasty.

Being built in a long period of time, the great Chinese wall has many sections built from different materials. Before using bricks the Great Wall was built in large part from earth, stone and wood. Due to the fact that it took huge amounts of materials to build the wall, builders have tried to exploit local materials. In the mountains rock was the main material used, in the plains they used earth and in the desert they even used the poor vegetation they could find (sand reed) and bind it whith earth.

The Great Wall was built with the help of millions of people: during the Qin Dynasty, a period of 10 years 300000 people of general Meng Tian were used. Later during the Qi Dynasty a section of 450 km was built with the aid of 1.8 million people. Because of the extremely heavy labor many workers have found the end there, manny of them even being buried in the walls of the building. The emperor Qi found a very engenious and sadistic way to get more workers to the wall. He used convicts to build the wall and the rule was that if a convict died before his sentece expired a family memeber had to take his place until the sentence had been exausted. This gave the building supervisors the means to push convicts as hard as they wanted because if they commited suicide a family member was brought in they’re place. This draticaly reduced the criminality in China so many soldiers where also used tu build the wall.

The Wall was not only build as a protection agains the tribes but it was also designed that if atacked soldiers on the wall could signal troups garrisoned far away in a matter of minutes. The wall is mainly composed of passages, walls and observation towers located at key high points. If the wall was atacked a fire was lighted on top of the towers and soldiers where imediately dispatced to that point.
In the begining of the XIX th century the wall was abandonded until 1952 when it was declared by the Chinese government a historical monument.

Nowadays the Great Wall sufferes of excesive tourism and because of the lenght of the wall and lack of funds manny portions of the wall are completely ruined. The wall in a relatively natural condition can be seen at Simatai, 110 km northeast of Beijing. This part of the wall is still in its original state, not turned into a popular tourist attraction, due to distance and few transportation options.

Tunisia, Sahara and Cartagina

Published by admin under Africa

The tourists who arrive in Tunisia thinking just about Sahara and the beaches on the Mediterranean coast will have a surprise of big proportions: the northern half of the country, where all touristic resorts  are grouped is extremely potential over the areas of southern Greece. When you’re in Cape Bon Peninsula, near the capital Tunis, you can even believe you are in the temperate areas of Europe: the corn fields and the plantations of grapes do not suggest in any way that you have reached northern Africa. If you want oases, sand dunes, dromedary, shortly speaking the whole Sahara, you must register in the optional tours for two days, which will take you right into the heart of the desert.
In June, a one week stay at a new hotel of four  stars, all included, costs only 299 euro, money which is added to airport charges.  If we take into account the fact that these funds are deducted about 110 euro per person (cost to place a charter flight), we understand why Tunisia receives about 6 million tourists every year. In fact, extremely low prices charged by hotels are the reason that most tourists who come here choose the two weeks stays, costing around 500 euro plus airport taxes.
Things do not change  even when you go out from the hotel: a meal for two persons, on a terrace at a near the great Roman amphitheatre at El Jem, costs 17 dinars, that is not even 10 euro. Normally, as in any Arab country, the tip has its place of honor, but at these prices it does not matter how big is the tip you give to the waiter.
An ideal climate, a long and gentle seacoast, Tunisia, the northernmost country of Africa has for over 3000 years witnessed the passage of Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Turks, Spanish and French. They came as fugitive s or adventurers, to conquer or to claim, warriors and missionaries, traders and farmers each leaving a part of their story in stone or mosaics, on hills of Carthage and the threshold of the Sahara. This heritage, Tunisia’s greatest wealth has been held in trust and preserved in hundreds of sites and museums from the small Punic museum in Utica to the vast collections of the prestigious National Museum of Bardo. Most Museums are closed on Mondays, whereas many on-site archeological museums and ruins are open all week. An entrance fee is usually charged and a caretaker will often act as guide.

Places to visit…

Sahara: the giant dunes - the desert offers adventure and magic, all without the need to give up comfort. You have the option of a luxury hotel and a car equipped with air conditioning. In fact neither holiday in Tunisia is complete without Sahara. You should try a three-day safari jeep with the unpredictable among the dunes of Sahara. But no one ever did it alone. Or simply, you can try something more quiet, such as the camel riding.

Cartagina: No other place in Tunisia does have such a strong resonance than Cartagina. Located in the suburbs of capital Tunis, the old fenician   city reveals even today part of its agitated history. The National Museum of Carthage owns an impressive collection of vases, statuettes or old inscriptions. Besides, recently restored, the imposing  Catedral of St. Louis, built on the same place where in 1270 Louis IX died during a crusade. But the best preserved Roman building remains the Theatre which, although mostly restored,it is hard to believe that bears the legacy of a so further past.

Combining history and culture, Antalya has deserved the title of “the capital of the Turkish tourism”. It is the main station in the Mediterranean region. Natural beauty, traditional cuisine and historic places around town offer splendid opportunities for a perfect vacation.

In Antalya the Bull Mountains descend directly into the sea’s clear waters, forming an irregular coastal line. The region, drown into the sun 300 days a year, is a paradise of sun bathings, aquatic sports and swimming.

The port remains undoubtedly the most interesting part of town.
Antalya is more than beaches, clean water and other conditions particularly attractive, at affordable prices. After several days of sun and fun, scuba diving and hiking, after you find the menus of restaurants and the atmosphere of Antalya places, you just take a walk through the city. Like many of the cities of Turkey, Antalya was founded in Greek period, and it developed very much under the Roman mastery. From the ruins to the Ottoman citadel, from the narrow streets and old houses or gardens, ending with the old port, Antalya is a small open air museum with a friendly and relaxing atmosphere, even if the weather is very hot most of the year.

Places to visit…
For those interested in the history of old places there are organized tours in the surroundings, where you’ll find the ruins of old settlements, such as Aspendos, Perge, Manavgat, Side and many others. Yat Limani: Antalya’s old port is today a modern port, where you can admire more fast and elegant yachts, but also where you can take lunch at one of the Restaurants.

The Archeological Museum: one of the best in Turkey. Here you can admire the many pieces found in many sites in the region. Some exhibits are unique in the world, and their value can not be estimated.

The Iskele Mosque: situated in the old port area, with a simple and elegant architecture, the Mosque is well-maintained even today.

Call Museum and Inan Kirac: hosted by an old Ottoman house, which preserves the charm of the past, is very popular especially among locals, who will recommend it every time.

The Mosque and Yivli minaret: located near the port, the Mosque with the impressive minaret was built in the XIIIth century.

Hidirlik Tower: a Roman tower, dating from the earliest IInd century B.C. No even today it is known what was its initial role. Researchers have advanced various hypotheses - a maritime lighthouse, a tomb, a turn for the defense - but Hidirlik Tower has preserved its mistery.

Fabulous projects of Dubai

Published by admin under Asia

The tallest sky-scraper in the world, the first underwater hotel, the biggest artificial islands of the planet, the place where 25% of the world’s cranes are concentrated. These are some of the records achieved or that will be achieved by a city that 15 years ago was surrounded by sand, an arid city with no personality.
Dubai is the dream of the billionaire petrol moguls aware that soon the oil tap will close, faraonic projects becoming a reality.
According to specialists Dubai’s oil reserves will be almost exhausted by the year 2010. The solution for a town situated in the middle of desert, free of other natural resources, seems to be tourism. A business venture that requires amounts of money only sheics and the billionaires have.

Dubai as a tourist attraction is the dream of Prince Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the president of Development and Investments Authority. His plan is one on the extent of available funds: attracting a number no less than 15 million tourists annually starting from the year 2010, the date on which is stipulated that the oil reserves of this state will be exhausted.

The sheics dream seems to be supported by figures. In 2007 Dubai attracted 6.45 million foreign tourists.
These are just some of the fabulous projects completed or nearing completion that you can find in Dubai:

The Burj al Arab
Burj al Arab is the tallest hotel in the world, with over 300 meters. It has also been called the world’s ”first 7 star hotel” containing luxury worthy of a sultan. Initial plans have started on the idea that the project will become what the Opera building is for Sydney or the Eiffel Tower for Paris. And they seem to have succeeded. Built on an artificial island, located approximately 200 meters from the coast, Burj Al Arab is among the most expensive hotels in the world, the cheapest apartment building is at 1000 dollars per night and the most expensive costs 30.000 dollars per night.

The World
The World represents another huge project being finalized. It is an artificially created chain of islands designed to simbolize the continents of the world. A real estate project in which customers can buy island properties bearing the name of the world’s countries.
The World consists of about 300 man-made islands, each having between 23 and 83 thousand square meters, separated by water surfaces between 50 and 2000 meters. The average price of properties will be of 25 million U.S. dollars, the entire cost of the project beeing estimated at 2.5 billion dollars. Among celebritatile who have already announced purchasing an island in the project which will be complete in 2008 include Rod Steward, Michael Schumacher and David Becham.

The Palm Jumeirah
Jumeirah is one of the largest artificial islands in the world, a real estate project developed near the coasts od Dubai by the same company that is building The World. It is the first island of a project which calls for the construction of three islands in the shape of a palm, Jumeriah beeing the smallest, the largest beeing the size of Paris. The three islands will add another 520 km in length to Dubais coastline.
Palm Jumeirah consists of a main island, representing the trunk of the palm, plus another 17 representing the fronds and finally round the island the crescent. The arhipelago lies on an area of approximately 25 square kilometers - about 800 football fields - and is connected to the city itself by a 300 meters long bridge.
Hydropolis
Hydropolis, self proclaimed “The first 10-star Hotel”,is a building located entirely below sea level. It is the most ambitious architectural project in Dubai, with costs estimated at over 500 million U.S. dollars.
Stretching on a surface of 10 hectares, Hydropolis will have over 220 apartments located at 20 meters bellow sea level. Virtually every room will have the marine life for a view. This project started construction in 2007 and the completion date is yet unknown.

These are just some of the mega projects of Dubai, whit new projects beeing anounced almost every month.
