The Copan ruins

Copan is a pre-Columbian city in Honduras, Central America in the Copán Department, near to the Guatemalan border. The place is highly invested with important culture heritage since the most apprehensive civilization in the world used to live and develop their lives here and these were the Maori civilization.
The place represents a site of major Maya kingdom of the Classic era (5th through 9th Centuries).
Very remarkable about Copan is the fact that here, important series of portrait stele, which are stone slabs, taller than it’s wide erected for funerals or commemorative purposes adjoining acropolis,  a large complex of overlapping step-pyramids, plazas, and palaces.
Unfortunately the beautiful buildings and unique structures, hieroglyphic stairway had collapsed due to the forces of nature like earthquakes and floods that lead to significantly damages. The city was abandoned by the Maya people in the early 10’Th century and was not discovered and excavated until 19’Th century, when explorers like Juan Galindo, John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood took the initiative to take a closer look to this mysterious place.
Something you must not miss visiting is the museum of Copan. Some examples of the Maoris intelligence, skills and technology examples can be seen here at the museum. At the entrance you will notice a huge stele painted with paint extracted from plants, large birds, over 8 feet tall, different Mayan people and amazing symbolic representations about the “underworld” or the life after death used to decorate the ancient city ofCopan.
It is like the whole wisdom of an ancient people is conserved between the walls of a museum and ruins of some of the most remarkable cities that ever existed.
The city has now about 3000 inhabitants and has a decidedly colonial aspect. The town has a good electric service, good drinking water and hotels.
