Canton city history

Published by admin under America North

It seems that Canton city first origins were in 1850. In 1890 Canton had already a population of 400 , a bank, flour mills, sawmills. In 10 years the city doubled his population and already was having 2 local newspaper and 3 general stores.

In 1915 the first hotel,Dixie Hotel was offering the best lodging and food in the city. But the city become to be an established one just in 1919. During the 1920′ lots of people attracted bye the Texas oil fields established  in Canton city and surroundings. Because the industry was booming those days they, bought land and established themselves in the surroundings of Canton city. Also in 1933 the local Academy had 500 white students and 27 black students. The city continued to expand and in 1950 the biggest flea market from the world was born. At the beginning it was a market that people from surrounding meet in the weekend before the first Monday from the month,to trade goods. But Canton  First Monday Trade Days evolved in the biggest flea market from the work on 30 acres of land. Also do to this fact the habitants didn’t pay any city taxes until 2006.

In our days everything you need for a modern city is there, lots of restaurants, banks, super stores, all the cable TV companies, all the facilities that usually a big city has. And if we compare the living expenses are at the half of the national average. Also Canton city is having a very active cultural life, so lots of exhibitions and events are held almost every week.

No win these days Canton city is a very quiet city mostly  with a population of more or less 5,000  . You can find everything you need in the city, and due to the Canton Monday Trade Days the city has plenty of Bed and Breakfast motels, but also camping spaces .If you want something different you can spend you holiday days at an ranch.
